Tinkling wind chimes beat the rhythm of the breeze,
Tempo sets for cardinal calls and woodpecker rat-a-tats.
Delicate doves swoop in tandem, gathering fallen seeds,
Wings aflutter and cooing their ‘mourning’ song.
Canada geese join in the chorus, squawking loudly
Their raucous return to nearby Gregory’s Pond.
Chipmunk chums scurry, nearly unobserved,
From under-deck to perennial pachysandra patch.
Violets show off their vibrant blues and golden hues,
Splattering dabs of color, defining perimeter.
Lillies of the Valley punch through with trumpet bells,
Amid a carpet of green and walls of forsythia yellow.
Bird bath, backyard hub of splish-splashing winged friends,
Rejoicing in reclaimed freedom.
April’s Opus.
