Dinner Guests

Was it a dream?
Or perhaps a scene from younger days.
Mom and Dad
Came to visit last night.

Happily we waved them in
Scurrying to pull up chairs.
For a moment, they were there;
We were, as once we were.

They were young again;
Her warm, brown hair falling in soft waves,
His handsome grin
Lighting up the room.

Alas the morn:
They’re gone.
And yet, they’re not.
What did they say?

Not a spoken word
Instead, a gentle shoulder touch,
A loving reminder that
We are never alone.

Haiku Friday: Serenity at Dawn

Morning Serenity
Morning Serenity, April 26, 2013

🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

Birdsong creeps upon
me, as starry moon sky sinks
low beneath the dawn.

🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

I am always inspired and most peaceful just before dawn, when it seems that bird song is moving in slowly, following the departure of the night.  In reality the birds are awakening, but if you use your imagination, you can almost feel the approach of the multitudes of birds, as the sun rises and their springtime morning song reaches a wonderful crescendo. Those who ‘sleep in’ are missing out on the most wondrous part of each day!

Vocal Gold

Vocal score: Verdi
Vocal score: Verdi

🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

A singable tune, with words profound
Inspired by the Hebrew slaves
A fitting tribute locked in time
A treasure for the ages, saved.

It’s become the anthem for the masses;
Downtrodden, yearning to breathe free.
He chose Nabucco to set forth
Va Pensiero, for populi.

This week we’ll sing a tribute
Of well known opera, vocal gold.
Chorus, orchestral pros and maestro;
Talents together, genius will again unfold.

A Glimpse of Glory

image

The irony is evident:
This vision of perfection
passes before our eyes,
unnoticed.

We think our lives to be the goal.
Without our knowing,
We suppress our raison d’être:
To become.

Suddenly we pause, we listen, we see!
In ecstacy, we stand transfixed,
Yearning for the soul’s perfection,
Having glimpsed our Truth.

Hidden Surprise

Hidden French Garden

🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Casement canvas before me,

a surprise!

French garden gathered within

marble, stony granite rock.

Sunlight streaming in

through aged vines,

coaxing colorful coleus;

and verdant vines reach skyward

as if in prayer.

Second Chances

3d-realistic-hourglass-screensaver-176

We’d been lost for years,

Searching for a sign that things might change.

At each juncture,

We chose our path together

Trusting that our charge into the new century,

Would alter

The trajectory of our lives.

This was written in response to Trifextra Challenge:  This weekend we’re asking for exactly 33 of your own words plus the following three words:
  • charge
  • century
  • lost
So 33 of yours plus 3 of ours means that everyone will have a 36 word response this time around.

I Remember When

image

I remember when:

  • telephones were on walls, desktops or in phone booths.
  • ‘Super 8’ was the hi-tech way to capture home movies; and when mini-computers were 10 feet by three by five, and were moved with hand trucks.
  • homes were heated by coal furnaces, and someone had to ‘shovel the coal’ or ‘bank the fire’ every few hours; and coal was replenished through a basement window, landing in a mountainous pile in the dusty dark coal bin.
  • milk was delivered a few times a week and left in the milk box on my front porch; and when the  ice-man would visit our neighborhood to deliver huge chunks of ice to ice boxes.
  • our street was the playground for neighborhood kids, who regardless of age, played together in pickup games of baseball, played hide and go seek, or flipped cards against a stoop; and you could leave your forgotten bike out all night would still be there in the morning.
  • we would pile into Daddy’s station wagon every Sunday afternoon to escape the sweltering heat, and ride-windows opened wide, to Grunnings for ice cream;
  • when admirers came ‘a-courting’ and young couples had curfews; and ‘going steady’ was a secret… until Mom and Dad found out (and they always did)!
  • We’d visit the convent on the way to the Prom, to introduce our dates to our beloved teachers; and our Dads took turns driving us to dances and after-dance pizza parlors, and safely home again.
  • a bride-to-be proudly wore her blushing color; and the innocent newlyweds cherished dearly their first night together as man and wife.

Yes, I remember all these things. Our lives have been enhanced in so many ways. And yet we recall nostalgically the simpler times, peering through the curtains of our history to remember, with context and perspective, the people we used to be and to understand the people we’ve become.

What’s for Dinner?

Photography ( and bread) by Joanne Edith

What’s for dinner?  Lets plan ahead
We can agree, we’ll start with bread.
Beef stew with dumplings, that should do,
For me, but definitely not for you.

Rack of lamb would be sublime
But you don’t like, it would all be mine.
Center-cut loin of pork is tops
Alas, you don’t eschew the chops.

Homemade penne vodka sauce for you?
Ok…or try a bottled brew.
Chicken grilled on barbecue…
You like, if pre-deboned-it’s true.

So back to basics, hubby’s faves:
Meatballs and gravy and leftovers saved.
Lasagna, burgers, dogs and slaw,
Potatoe salad, radishes and more.

Deviled eggs and sloppy joe’s,
BLT’s and Doritos.
Popover tops, and cheese filled cakes,
Grape nuts, shredded wheat and shakes.

Eggplant parm and home-made fries
Tarte tatin and homemade pies
Yours tastes are simple…I clearly see
You’re worth weight in gold, to me!

Color me…

                                                                                         Color me blah,

Color me gray

An outline of ash

Would suit this day.

Color me weary,

Color me beige

A tone without loudness

for me would assuage.

Color me dry,

Color me black.

Grout me with ecru,

                                                                                But don’t let me crack!

Color me over!

Color me done!

I’ll wait for tomorrow…

Then color me Sun!
